A €100,000 Savings in a Geothermal Project Thanks to Proper Sizing
An Apex Heat energy expert uncovered €100,000 in savings in a project plan after realizing that the initial sizing of the geothermal system was based on incorrect heat consumption data.
“Apex Heatin energia-asiantuntija löysi projektisuunnitelmasta 100 000 euron säästön, kun alkuperäinen maalämpöjärjestelmän mitoitus oli tehty perustuen väärään lämmönkulutukseen.”

How Apex Heat Saved €100,000 in a Geothermal Project by Considering a Window Renovation
When it comes to reducing a building's energy consumption, even small changes can have significant effects. One of our clients experienced this firsthand when the original geothermal system sizing would have cost €100,000 more than the final design.
The Original Plan – Accurate Data, Incomplete Analysis
Initially, the geothermal system was sized based on the building’s recorded heat consumption, which was considered up-to-date and accurate according to the company’s records. However, the plan failed to account for a recent extensive window renovation. The upgraded windows had significantly reduced the building’s heat demand, but this wasn’t reflected in the old consumption data.
Heat Consumption Was Modeled Incorrectly
An Apex Heat energy expert realized that the window renovation had been overlooked in the sizing process. When the situation was re-modeled with the improved windows, it became clear that the size of the geothermal system could be reduced considerably. Modern low-energy windows have a minimal U-value for heat loss compared to old single- or double-glazed windows.
This meant that the original plan did not need to be fully implemented. In addition to requiring a smaller heat pump, the number of boreholes needed was significantly reduced, leading to substantial savings—€100,000. This is a prime example of how accurate analysis and consideration of the right data can result in significant cost savings for the customer.
Borehole Sizing – A Key Consideration
Although savings were achieved, it’s important to note that proper borehole sizing is crucial. If too few boreholes are drilled or if they are too shallow, the efficiency of the geothermal system may be compromised. This could result in additional heating demand being covered by electric heaters, increasing operating costs. Over time, there is also a risk that the boreholes’ thermal energy could be depleted if their capacity is insufficient for the heating needs.
Conclusion – Savings with Proper Sizing
Especially for larger properties, it is essential to conduct a thorough and comprehensive analysis before investing in energy retrofits. Apex Heat’s expertise and ability to account for all factors, such as property renovations and improvements, can deliver significant savings for clients and ensure that the investment is financially viable in the long run.
